Joseph Harwood is a two spirit, transgender artist who grew up in Brighton and Hove, England. Beginning a career as a fashion model at fifteen after being scouted by the editor of Dazed and Confused magazine, he began to travel the world for both menswear and womenswear campaigns. Whilst in Tokyo, he was able to transition into the world of makeup and beauty and found recognition with his naturally androgynous style.
Creating relatable and innovative content on Youtube, which at the time was a platform where there was minimal LGBT representation, his work hit a viral success at only nineteen when he was featured across BuzzFeed, the Daily Mail and GQ just to name a few. Developing his work, he began attracting the attention of many celebrities who requested his skills as a makeup artist. In 2013, he entered Simon Cowell's YouGeneration competition, to find the next big YouTube talent with a video sharing his transformative skills and evocative gender expression. In April the following year, Joseph Harwood was announced via the influencers Pixiwoo as not only the winner of his individual category, but the first ever transgender winner of the entire competition.
In 2015 Harwood worked alongside L'Oreal the Brush Contest, collaborated with the brand BeeGood on the design and development of skincare products available across the UK and built a heavy roster of promotional work with brands like Estee Lauder, Interscope, Rimmel, Artis and many more. He launched a secondary channel with a wide number of individuals called Perfect Androgyny, to create a safe place and pay homage to the multiple gender variants we identify as. Boasting over thirty one million views across his network, Harwood has created award nominated art videos ranging from the hair industry to the fashion world, with collaborative work such as the video Opaline. He has created an anti bullying campaign alongside the organization Ditch the Label which conveyed social norms vs personal expression. During December of 2016, Harwood was the only trans person featured in the topical Google End of Year Highlights video paying tribute to David Bowie on the Google home page.
Today Harwood is working alongside multiple brands as a cosmetic formulator, creating steps towards his goal of a personalized luxury fragrance and design house and continuing to find comfort in his identity. At twenty six, his work has been seen on multiple publications, television networks and he continues to grow.
Joseph was identified as male at birth, yet knew instinctively very early on that his expression was out of sync with social norms. Naturally developing in a typically more feminine pattern at thirteen, he experienced life in school often being ridiculed and misgendered. He opted to transition to the female specific classes at fourteen and was one of the fortunate people to have gained a career despite his differences, and identified as non binary from then. It was only at twenty four that Harwood discovered he was born with additional chromosomes, XXXY, which caused a difference in growth and this was ignored throughout his life despite extreme physical symptoms of dysphoria, mental health issues and medical intervention. He identifies with any pronouns, as long as they're said with a smile.
