2019

I've always wanted to create digital art that could be used at home and inspire people, so I created my first instagram filters inspired by my designs in cosmetics launched during 2019. JHSkin was born and it began to be used to replicate great skin as if I had done your makeup. The contour of the nose was my signature style and it became a worldwide smash, with 20m uses in under 6 months.

One of my biggest inspirations has been technology in beauty, I learnt to create makeup illusions from studying CGI in games, and in my earliest videos I used my hair colour as a green screen to change the aesthetic before I could afford wigs. It was something that I noticed could be done from Purikura machines in Tokyo, which had filters in when I visited in 2008, and before. I always wanted to learn how things worked, and it was a key component in my creative outlets.

In 2019 I was approached by YouTube to be a product tester for Google, and to consult on some of the beta functions. These included the upload system, the audio library, the child friendly options, the mobile app version of uploads, the distribution of content and the algorithm. I then criticised the way in which the platform did not include data from the LGBT community when programming this algorithm, and in 2016 September, the bell function blocked old school creators from accessing their subscribers. My content personally became affected by this and I was forced to move offline, but in many ways it was the exact right time as that year I was the Google home page and things move on. But I wanted to change the game for younger creatives so I gave that data.

Data is an important component in creating AI driven technology and I have made in my mission to offer the data I have from my outlets to new projects. In 2022 I was invited to be a part of the Advisory Board for AI/AR company Revieve, which is an extraordinary accomplishment. I am part of a team of incredible talent, and being the only trans person, I am determined to educate and inform these companies on how we can make the data more inclusive and the experience of using these tech facilities encompassing of all kinds of people.

Dell AR Filter Experiments

Here are some of the experiments I’ve been making with the XPS device, leading into some finals that I can’t wait to share with you later. I took the Dell logo and tessellated it, and worked with a filter layout system.
