I created this look very much inspired by Pete Burns! He has always been one of my biggest inspirations for so many reasons and I particularly related to his ability to shift from one form to the next. Check out the original Instagram version here.
I really love the hair here and it's a water wave unit from Eva Wigs. I love the texture on me and I thought I'd pair it with a simple eye, memento by OCC on the lips and a fun outfit. Back in the day I found this jumpsuit in a vintage store in Brighton, fell over and ripped the leg! What a mess! I was looking on ebay for something and I found the identical one, so I bought it in a snap and built a look around it. I used a simple belt chain and no jewellery, and matched it with a sheering sheep fur coat.
During the time where Dead or Alive were being pushed into the chart system, many of the media networks actually refused to allow him to perform with male backing dancers or even in revealing outfits because they deemed it unfit for TV. The entire US press told him to pretend to be straight, despite him being in a relationship with his then wife Lynn. His second and third albums with DoA never got the allowance to shine in the chart system for the genius they were because of this, and despite knocking Michael Jackson off the number 1 dance charts with Brand New Lover.
Had this song been pushed into the chart system it would have hit number 3 in the all genre charts and the perception of that would have affirmed his success within the US media. I have always related to the concept of this, not being allowed to reach the planned goal because of what I am. If you breakdown the majority of my looks it's sourced from Pete's early work. As a reaction to this, Pete began working on his following up album Nude, which is one of the most underrated bodies of work from this era. He took the promotion to Japan, an area that allowed androgyny in the media and it was a tremendous success and influence on Japanese music today. It's a real hybrid of Sylvester, Divine and a punk attitude that uses the correct pronouns. One day I am going to recreate a version of I Cannot Carry On in the same vein as when another one of. my idols Lauryn Hill used samples of many of the black artists that were stolen from in her work.
